DVD Review: Sherri The Complete Season One

If you’ve seen Sherri Shepherd in a comedy before or being the light of the conversation on The View, than you will definitely enjoy Sherri The Complete Season One which is on DVD today.

Run Time: 4 hours, 40 minutes + extras
Release Date: April 27, 2010

Actress, comedienne, author and co-host of ABC’s “The View,” Sherri Shepherd stars as Sherri Robinson, a single mother who juggles caring for her six-year-old son, Bo (Brandon Khalil), and working part-time as a paralegal, while still following her dream to become a full-time comedienne/ actress in SHERRI: THE COMPLETE SEASON ONE. The debut DVD release from this top-rated Lifetime series will be available this April on 3 discs featuring all 13 episodes and tons of bonus footage…only from A&E Home Entertainment!

Recently separated from her cheating husband, Kevin (Malcolm-Jamal Warner, “The Cosby Show”), Sherri finds solace and support from her girlfriends at the office: Celia (Tammy Townsend, “Lincoln Heights”), Angie (Elizabeth Regen, “The Black Donnellys”), and even her overbearing supervisor, Summer (Kali Rocha, “Grey’s Anatomy”). But, her life becomes even more complicated when Kevin reveals that Paula (Kate Reinders, “Ugly Betty”), the 20-year-old he had an affair with, is pregnant!

Sherri The Complete Season One brings laugh out loud comedy in every minute of its half hour airing. If you are a fan of Sherri Shepherd already, you will absolutely love this sitcom. While it is enlightening to watch a show based loosely on Sherri Shepherd’s own life, it is much more entertaining to watch the situations Sherri is faced with with her ex-husband, 2 love interests, and work. The cliffhanger in the season finale really hooks viewers in for the next season, that is for sure. Now while the show is very amusing and will make you literally laugh out loud, there is an equal balance between comedy and facing reality as words of wisdom are spoken through the comedy.

Women empowerment is a big theme on the show and don’t worry, it’s not a show that preaches feminism, but it is a show about surviving and dealing with what life has in store for you as opposed to what you have in store for you. My only concerns for the shows future are that…the racial jokes and comments should be toned down, well really cut out altogether and while the cast is great, the scenes should not continue to seem so rehearsed in the next season. All of the characters are likeable, possibly because we get to see how vulnerable they all are and this is only the beginning. This was a very well written first season so season two should be fabulous.

Special Feature:

Webisodes (17:37) – There are 8 webisodes which show Sherri doing stand up comedy, a continuation of her brief stand up scene in an episode of the show. This comedy does not come close to the hilarity that Sherri creates in her real life stand up gigs and even her off the wall comments on The View. This is family friendly comedy and all spins off from an episode of the show in a sense…though the only webisode I found myself laughing out loud at was “Game Night.” Bloopers would have been much more entertaining to watch and it would have been interesting to see the cast talk about what they think of the love triangle! Regardless, this was a pretty decent bonus feature and will definitely encourage people to check out Sherri doing stand up in real life for the real fun!
