David Blue Talks Stargate Universe

Stargate Universe returns tonight with all new episodes and after a great preview interview at Syfy’s Upfront event, I talked to David Blue again for a more in depth look in the show and what else he’s up to. Check it out.

Based on your recent tweets, you hate spoilers no? Has it always been that way for you?
Yeah, for a couple of reasons…I have a horrible tendency to have things ruined for me…in addition to having my brother telling me the end of Planet of the Apes the first time I watched it and accidentally walking into the last 10 minutes of the movie, Twister since no one told me the showing I was going to was running late. I love moments that surprise me. My favorite moments in Lost and Fringe and my other favorite shows are the moments that I don’t expect to happen. I understand the need to show things to bring in new viewers but I feel like somethings ruin what you have to look forward to as a fan.

Do you think there are cliques on board?
I love it when they make of that in shows like Lost where someone pops up and everyone’s like, “Who are you?” and the person has been there for months. Eli was brought into this by Young and thrown directly into Rush and they directed this in an earlier episode when Eli asked why everyone thought he knew everything and the response was along the lines of “Because you’re part of the cool crowd.” When you have a group of people with certain capabilities and are saving the day left and right, of course those people will become closer and like best friends. But a lot of our recurring guest characters are some of my favorites. We talk about it quite a bit about what our relationships are between us and them.

You mentioned at Syfy Upfront that trust issues will make things come to a boiling point but would you ever want it to get to the point where the trust issues were so bad that it became an “every man for himself” type of scenario?
If I were Eli I wouldn’t but as a viewer that would be fun. (laughs) It starts out as, “Okay guys, we need to get together and find some water” and then it becomes, “Okay, I’m gonna die…what am I doing?” Then it gets more interesting, it raises the stakes quite a bit. It becomes more intriguing. Then it’s not just about if the person is trustworthy in general but, do I trust you enough to believe in you?

What are you most excited for the fans to see in the second half of SGU?
The first few episodes back will set the tone. It goes back to the stories that were planned out in the beginning. Getting to know these characters is going to pay off and it’s going to be really amazing. I’m just excited not to have to wait anymore for everyone else to watch “Space” and “Divided.” It’s so interesting to see where the people go. When I finished episode 20, I thought, “Wait, this is it?” I was amazed and it hit me that there weren’t going to be anymore episodes until we shot them. And it really annoyed me. I want to know what’s next and I know the fans will too.

This is the last season of Ugly Betty, have you kept up with the show since you last appeared?
Absolutely. I watched it before I was cast and continued after and it’s not just because I’m still friends with many of the cast members but it’s a great show. Everyone is brilliant and will go on to amazing projects so I’m looking forward to that as well.

Can you tell me more about your projects aside from SGU?
I’m producing a film, also producing & directing a short this summer, aiming for the festivals, and in talks for some other projects. It’s hard though with the show that shoots 20 episodes in Vancouver with a short hiatus but we sure as hell try to schedule it out anyway (laughs). Though there’s nothing I can talk about specifically just yet so stay tuned.

How are things going into a project as an actor and then going in as a writer, etc..?
I kind of enjoy the acting part more because I don’t have to worry about all of the decisions. As an actor, I just try to do the best performance that I can. But at the same time it’s really exciting as a writer…being able to create something out of nothing. I write for fun. I wrote some stuff for fun for SGU and I enjoyed coming up with the plot points and humor myself. The day that they say to me, “We want to see something you wrote” or “We’d like for you to direct this episode,” that is such a humbling compliment and I’d love to be welcomed into that family. Right now we’re just enjoying Eli so I’m just glad he is sticking around.
