Catching Up with Tamera Mowry

Tamera Mowry hasn’t slowed down since her successful run on the 90s hit show, Sister, Sister. You’ve seen her in the films Seventeen Again, The Hot Chick, and Twitches as well as on the small screen playing doctor on Strong Medicine and on ABC Family’s Roommates. Now, Tamera is gearing up to promote her new film, Double Wedding which premieres on Lifetime this summer. I was thrilled to be able to speak to her about the film, her upcoming docu-series, and so much more.

I was surprised to find out that the film, Double Wedding is your first producing credit. Why producing now?
I have to give my mother credit because after Sister, Sister, Tia and I did a couple of television movies together and then we went to school. I definitely wanted to get my college degree. That was very important to me. After that, we had been going on auditions and we each got something but in the meantime…my mom had said she didn’t understand why we were coming to her about what auditions were up next. She said, “Why don’t you girls do it yourself? You can do it. You’ve been in the business for a long time, you have all of the tools that you need, and have an amazing fan base.” So Tia and I looked at each other and agreed to try it. So Lifetime was interested in doing a television movie with us and my mom encouraged us to go to Earth Cafe in Studio City and pick 4 movies that we thought Lifetime would want to buy. We did it. We did not leave that cafe until we came up with 4 ideas and one of those ideas was Double Wedding. Lifetime immediately loved it and ever since then, Tia & I have just loved every moment of the process. It’s a lot harder because as an actress, you just read the script and show up to do the best that you can do…whereas being a producer, you are always getting calls for ideas. Not only that, but you have your name stamped on the project so you want to make sure that you cast the right people, have the right hair, makeup, & wardrobe, the right director, you are telling the story the best that you can…there is so much more involved. Although it is a lot more challenging, I love this process…it is so rewarding after you see the finished product. I love Double Wedding and I hope you all do too.

Can you elaborate more on working on this project from an acting standpoint and from the producing standpoint? Also, what was it like working with director, Craig Pryce ?
Because it was my first experience as a producer and as an actress, I didn’t realize the difficulty in changing hats. I’m a very spontaneous actress, I like to listen and go with my gut. However, being a producer, you have to be a thinker. You have to be very analytical. You are looking from the outside which is the opposite of when you act because when you act, you are supposed to be present and in the moment. So switching hats, I would be acting and find myself thinking as a producer. So that was a bit challenging. What made it amazing though was the fact that I had my sister there, who knows me and can push me further than the director can. The director knows my work but my sister knows my potential and my work. It was great having Craig there for the foundation but having Tia there was amazing. You know, this really was one of my best experiences because I really found my nitch. Producing is something I would love to do for the rest of my life.

I’m sure you’ve been asked a million times if it is better or more difficult when working with your sister, Tia but with this project, you two are both going into it as producers. How has that been different and is there a line between being a sister and being a co-worker?
What’s so funny about that…to answer your question about is there a line…Tia & I wanted to go to therapy before we did this movie, because there is a line and we wanted to make sure that whenever we would cross that line, it wouldn’t be detrimental. We know how we are as sisters…we don’t get along all of the time but we didn’t want that to affect our project. We couldn’t be too personal, we couldn’t let that get in the way. Within therapy, we had to learn what was the best way of approaching the situation. Also, Tia takes criticism differently than the way that I take criticism so we had to learn those differences and then adjust accordingly. Then we had to make sure that we weren’t giving each other notes on the way that we would act certain scenes. We had to learn how to draw the line. We had to learn it (laughs).

What was your favorite part about shooting in Canada?
My favorite part about shooting the movie in Canada was the fact that it was a surreal moment. I know it sounds so cliche and maybe even corny but whatever you put your mind to and you have the tools to do it, all you have to do is show up. It was amazing to see what we dreamed about happening. It reminded me of when Tia and I started Sister, Sister. You know, here are these girls, these army brats not having many acting credits to their name on a sound stage at Paramount. It’s kind of like the same, “Oh my Gosh, it’s happening” experience. It wasn’t easy. It took 3 years for this project to get made so it has been surreal. It has made us hungry for more, so now we are producing our own docu-series on Style Network. The series will follow us behind the scenes of our sisterhood and now our production company together.

I had no idea about the docu-series. I am so excited!
That’s great! You’ll get to see how we work. You never got to see how Tia & Tamera really were over the years. Our integrity and reputation means so much to us, that’s why we have stayed private. And now that we are older, doing our thing, and no longer under Mommy and Daddy, we want to finally introduce ourselves to the world. So we are excited about that.

So with producing now on your resume, can we expect to see you screenwriting and directing?
Yeah, Tia & I actually wrote the Pilot for the docu-series. Directing, I don’t think I can do. Tia, hands down. I think Tia is the better director and I’ll take producing…we both work hand in hand when writing. But we plan to put our hands in everything (laughs).

So you pitched Double Wedding & the docu-series? Was it nerve wrecking?
What people don’t realize is that Tia & I pitched Sister, Sister.

Oh my Goodness.
Yeah! At 14 years old, we had no idea what we were doing but we met up with producers and a writer, pitched it to ABC, CBS, Fox…and ABC was the one who bought it. So we’ve been pitching since the beginning. So it wasn’t nerve wrecking at all because we have a formula that works and we are so confident in our fan base…so you either like it or you don’t (laughs).

You’ve also got the quite an incredible voice so let’s put it out there what Broadway shows you would love to work in because I want to see you in NYC.
You are so sweet, thank you! I started singing around 8 years old in pageants and such. Tia & I tried to get a record deal but we never got past getting a record deal because it is a very hard lifestyle to live. You are always on the road and it is just really hard. So yeah, my dream is to be on Broadway. I would love to do a show on Broadway like Beauty & the Beast or The Little Mermaid.

I can’t talk about music without talking about the hottest show on TV right now…Glee. Do you watch Glee?
I love Glee! My dream role is to play a musical teacher on there. Those kids are amazing and that’s how Tia & I started…you had to know how to sing, dance, and act. So being on that show, it would be amazing to tap into all of those talents.

Double Wedding airs this summer only on Lifetime.
