NYC Independent filmmaker and producer, David Spaltro completed his first feature film last year, Around…, starring Rob Evans and Molly Ryman. The story is a labor of love about a young man with a dual life “living” out of Penn and Grand Central Station while going to film school.

This is good storytelling at it finest. Around… is an honest and intelligent story about the journey of a young man going after his dreams no matter what challenges come his way. This is written very realistically and is quite an impressive debut film all around. Not only is it uplifting but there’s a love story that develops. There is so much heart in the story and the leads, the charming Rob Evans and Molly Ryman make their characters relatable and lovable. Filmmakers trying to get their name known in the industry can appreciate how genuine of a character, starving artist has been crafted as Doyle.

The beginning of the film sets up the film brilliantly, as viewers get to see how Doyle ended up where he did and the rest, you’ll have to watch play out on screen. I will say that my favorite scenes in the film are when Doyle gets very wise advice about how to live his life from the people he would least expect. Whether he follows that advice or at least puts it in his back pocket, I won’t say.

Though the film could be seen as coming of age, viewers of all ages can appreciate this film as it deals with many aspects of life including a dysfunctional family, financial conflicts, illness, etc… Around… is very much a dramedy and a romance which makes for an equally entertaining and inspiring hour and 43 minutes. Ironically, for a film that should lift people up, the tone seems quite dark. Though if you love indie films, you will definitely enjoy Around… and will find yourself anticipating what’s next for filmmaker, David Spaltro.

Be on the lookout for the soundtrack as well, comprised of several local NYC bands including My Teenage Stride, Takka Takka, Black Hollies, and the Diggs as well as the score by Vita Tanga and Grammy winning producer Carlos “Storm” Martinez.
