Interview: Eden Sher on ABC’s The Middle

Eden Sher plays Patricia Heaton’s daughter, Sue Heck on ABC’s hit series The Middle and with tonight’s special Valentines Day episode airing, I wanted to talk to Eden about what to expect tonight and more.

What can you tell us about your experience filming tonight’s episode, Valentine’s Day?
It was pretty fun, pretty epic I have to say. It’s the only time Sue has ever worn makeup. She goes pretty over board with the makeup so that was fun doing something in makeup since usually I don’t wear anything.

What has been your favorite Valentines Day gift?
Oh God, I don’t know. I never do anything for Valentine’s Day. One of my friends took me out to dinner on Valentine’s Day with her boyfriend, so it wasn’t too romantic for me but it was a wonderful dinner.

What was the audition process like for The Middle?
I auditioned about 3 times. I screen tested twice and finally I booked it. It was quite long and extensive.

Do you find yourself naturally funny or did you find that a sitcom would be a fun challenge?
I guess I consider myself somewhat funny. You kind of have to have some natural comedic timing to try out for a sitcom. Though I don’t think I’m a naturally funny person but I can perform comedy well. The writing is so well and that’s what makes it so funny.

Sue tries to find anything she might be good at…what do you think that she is good at?
I don’t know, well have to wait and see! She’ll be good at something, something really weird and obscure, probably.

Sue has tried twirling, swimming, and more…what has Sue done that you are good at?
I’m actually a pretty good singer, dancer, and swimmer.

What has been your favorite episode to shoot?
The Jeans or The Neighbor. The Neighbor was the episode with Brooke Shields and I had a kung-fu fighting scene. That has definitely been my favorite scene to shoot so far.

What was it like having Brooke Shields on set?
It was awesome. She is really nice and she was so funny! I did not expect her to be so naturally funny. I didn’t have any scenes with her so I was able to relax on set and watch the scenes and she was so funny!

Who would you like to see guest star on The Middle?
Anyone who is funny and would like to be on the show is totally welcome in my book…I mean there are a couple teenage hotties that I would like to see on the show but I don’t know how they could be written in.

What have you learned from working with Patricia Heaton?
I have learned so much about how to perform a comedy, how to execute a sitcom. She is really talented and super funny and I’m so happy to be able to work with her.

What would you like to see take place in the second season?
I would like to see Sue get a love interest or maybe succeed at one thing, even have a minor success.

You’ve appeared on many shows including Party Down, and Weeds. Of all of the shows that you have appeared on, what show would you love to go back to if you had the opportunity?
I would love to go back to Weeds if they would ever like to bring that character back for me to play. That was a fun character to play.

The Middle airs Wednesdays at 8:30/7:30c on ABC.
