Interview: Adrienne Bailon On New Album, Acting, & More

2010 is going to be a big year for Adrienne Bailon who after years of singing with the groups 3LW and The Cheetah Girls is set to release her debut solo album! There’s lots to share about what’s coming up for 2010 so keep reading for more.

Regarding your upcoming album, can you tell us what the status is on this project?
We are hoping for a April release of my first single and a summer release for the album. It’s been a great creative process, we haven’t been rushing. We’ve been taking our time and really trying to reflect on the album who I really am. I got to work with almost everybody that I had on my wish list including Bryan-Michael Cox, The Dream, Rodney Jerkins, Jerry Wonder, The Stereotypes, Ne-Yo, D’Mile, Rico Love…it’s been such an amazing experience. We don’t have a title for the album yet and we aren’t positive what the first single will be just yet…it’s between two records right now so you’ll probably hear about it in a couple of weeks.

You have worked with many incredibly talented people on this album, how did these collaborations come together?
Well, for this album I think people were really curious, thinking, “What is this Cheetah Girl’s album going to sound like? Is it going to be for kids or is she going to grow up on us?” I think it was more the curiosity that drew in the producers and writers…they thought it would be a challenge to see what kind of songs they could come up for on my project. It’s been great since many of the people I have worked with have been a fan of my work with 3LW and the Cheetah Girls. It’s cool having the people I look up to being interested in working with me.

Can you tell us about your song that we haven’t heard yet, “Rainy Days?”
“Rainy Days” was produced by Jerry Wonder and written by Claudette Ortiz from City High. I love the record. It’s about a relationship that fell apart and it’s something that I relate to. It’s one of the slower records on the album but is one of my favorites. It’s a very honest record which I love.

Do you draw the line when it comes to sharing extremely personal songs that you have written?
I actually don’t draw the line. I think the more personal, the better the song is going to be. The vulnerability in my voice when I’m singing…the purpose of this solo album is that I want my fans to get to know me on a personal level. Also for control because when you are in a group, you take on the sound and image of the group and I think it was time for me to step up on my own and let the fans hear what I have to say on my own.

Would you ever work with your ex 3LW & Cheetah Girls mates for a music or acting project in the future or all solo work from now on?
Oh of course, I am always open to that though right now I am just focusing on the solo stuff.

Can fans expect a tour for this album this or next year?
I am hoping so…I am a huge fan of the girls doing their thing like Nikki Minaj and Rihanna. Hopefully the tour could be an all girl tour, that would be dope.

Would you ever release a live or acoustic album?
100% yes. I am actually going to be posting some YouTube videos where fans will see me working in the studio so you may see acoustic versions of some of the new songs. After touring for so many years, I don’t know why but I feel like I sound better live. I’ll listen to a song and think, “I can’t wait to sing it live.” I think my favorite part of being an artist is performing live.

Do you enjoy co writing more or writing by yourself more?
I like co-writing. It’s so great to be in a room with such talented and experienced writers. The vibe is great, sharing stories and ideas…it is one of my favorite creative processes being in the studio and collaborating.

Do you find that there are some genres of music that are more inspiring than others?
I think it depends on the artist and what you are into…I think different genres are inspiring for different reasons. For me, a Lil Wayne song can be very inspiring for an ab workout and then there’s Enya who will inspire you to be calm and find your own. It just depends on the mood you are in and how you want to be inspired.

Can you give fans an update on your acting career?
I am working on 2 movies this year. I start working on a film called, “The Church Girl” in March.

Are you still open to Disney projects in the future or have you moved on completely?
I’m totally open to Disney projects, I just think it needs to be age appropriate. I’m 26 years old and I’d rather not continue playing a 14 year old. (laughs)

You’ve pretty much done family films, what genres are you looking forward to exploring in the future?
I would love to do a comedy like Wedding Crashers, Step Brothers, or Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I love to watch those kind of films so being able to work on one would be really cool.

If you were to guest star on your favorite shows on TV right now, what would those shows be?
Law and Order Special Victims Unit, Entourage, or True Blood.

As you recently mentioned on your twitter, you are gearing up for fashion week, so who are your favorite designers?
I love Alice + Olivia, Elizabeth and James, Robert Rodriguez, Tracy Reese, Michael Kors, BCBG Max Azria…I’m really excited about fashion week.

So aside from the album and films, what else is in store for you in 2010?
I really want to get more involved in charities. I’m talking about opening up my own charity, so I’m working on that.

So there’s no truth to the rumor that you are joining In the Heights on Broadway?
Umm…I was asked if I was available to do it but at this moment I’m not available to do it. But I am totally open to it and would love to do it if the opportunity comes up again. So there is no truth to that right now. I actually took my mom to see In The Heights for her birthday and I plan to see it again in a few weeks with friends.

What are some Broadway shows that you have enjoyed or want to see?
I’ve never seen The Lion King and would love to see that. I loved Legally Blonde, Monty Python, Cats…one of my favorites when it was Off Broadway was Marc Anthony’s The Capeman.

Earlier you mentioned charity. What have you been doing to reach out to Haiti?
It’s pretty crazy because the main producer on my album is Jerry Wonder, Wyclef’s cousin. Almost everybody that I worked with at the studio is Haitian so it really hit home and everybody had to disband. So I talked to Wyclef, trying to figure out what I can do. I’ve been collecting clothes, plates, cups, just the necessities. Collecting and sending care packages, raising money, texting Yele was a genius idea, donating to UNICEF, American Cross, etc… it is all very helpful so I encourage everyone to do what they can to help.
