DVD Review: Super Heroes

Super Heroes, the 2007 independent drama that follows an Iraq War veteran and the young man who documents his recovery is available on DVD today.

Dash Mihok (“The Perfect Storm,” “The Thin Red Line”) stars as veteran Ben Patchett, who has come home to New York suffering from emotional as well as physical trauma. Anguished by what he has witnessed in Iraq and greviously wounded, he must also deal with the heartbreak of being abandoned by his wife for another man. But during a support group session with other troubled veterans, Ben meets a young documentary filmmaker (Spencer Treat Clark of “ Mystic River ” and “Gladiator”) who wants to tell his story. Together, in the tranquility of a cabin in the Catskill Mountains, these two men will explore the damage of war, the limitations of redemption, and the power of friendship to heal even the deepest wounds.

Right away, Super Heroes is interesting because it doesn’t follow any comic book heroes like you would think, but instead is about the aftermath of what one of the heroes of our country goes through after the battle…though it seems the inner battle has just begun. It is truly heartbreaking to see what these men go through at the group sessions in the veterans clinic and what Ben has to deal with physically and mentally. Honestly this film as a whole seems to be physically and emotionally draining though the little rays of light throughout the film come through with Nick’s view, the documentary point of view.

I bet Nick didn’t know all that he was in for when he originally set to document Ben! Ben’s scars on his back will forever be ingrained in my mind. Ben’s recalling of a memory of shooting a little boy…heartbreaking. But at the same time it is quite heartwarming to see Nick get close to Ben and see how their friendship progresses throughout the film. Though Nick helps Ben open up more, in the end, it’s just not enough to keep Ben sane. This is a very moving piece that might hit too close to home for those who have fought overseas and is a major reality check for those who will never go overseas. This is a heavy drama that is not for everyone, but if you do take the opportunity to see this, you will be touched.

Bonus Features:

Commentary – The commentary is conducted by director, Alan Brown and actor Dash Mihok. The commentary is much more interesting than the film itself, as it is actually entertaining and also not only gives information about the screenplay but about shooting the film. It’s quite amazing that this film was shot in 18 days…what an incredible amount of emotions to portray in such a short amount of time. The director shares an enormous amount of information, things you don’t notice until he brings it up and more noticeable aspects such as filming in the weather that they shot in, etc… This is a very entertaining and resourceful commentary to listen to, so if you made it through the entire film once, definitely check out the commentary.
