DVD Review: 10 Things I Hate About You Volume One

On Tuesday January 12th the ultimate sibling rivalry is back as 10 Things I Hate About You Volume One releases on DVD!

Release Date: January 12, 2010
Rating: TV-14
Running Time: 230 minutes

From the director of the original hit movie comes the hilarious ABC Family Series 10 Things I Hate About You. Viewers will experience the ultimate sibling rivalry with the show that Jennifer Goodwin of E! Online calls “wickedly funny, smart and sweet.” Meet Kat (Lindsey Shaw) and Bianca (Meaghan Jette Martin), two very different sisters who have their own unique views on high school life and teenage love. Kat is a feisty, smart student activist who wants to stand out, and Bianca is a sweet social butterfly who just wants to fit in. Things get a lot more complicated, however, when Kat meets the mysterious Patrick Verona (Ethan Peck).

10 Things I Hate About You will pleasantly surprise you that is for sure. For anyone who thinks that nothing can come close to the epic 10 Things film…this does! First, this is the best acting you will see among the newer ABC Family Original shows – and most of the cast are newcomers. Second, the casting couldn’t have been any better and the chemistry among each of the actors is brilliant, especially among Lindsey Shaw and Ethan Peck. Third, the writing is fantastic! The back story created is just as fans would want. The show is so clever, very comedic and pretty risqué. Fourth, returning to 10 Things after 10 years, director, Gil Junger and actor, Larry Miller. Fifth, though not set in Seattle, the story makes terrific use of their Los Angeles setting (i.e. the episode, Light My Fire) and this is only the beginning for the show using its many resources. 10 Things I Hate About You is not a show you want to miss because you’ll be hating hearing about all of the things everyone loves about the show…and the DVD special features.

Bonus Features:
This DVD has some of the best bonus features out of all of the recent ABC Family Original show DVDs…because there is content and while I was disappointed that 10 Things writers, Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith had no presence in the bonus features, it was still a very well planned arrangement of features.

Bloopers (2:24) – This was a fun blooper reel mainly consisting of shots of the cast messing up their lines…there’s also a slip/fall and more on here, with the perfect ending!

10 Things I Hate Vs. 10 Things I Love – The Cast Answers Crazy Questions (12:26) – The cast and crew sit down on set individually to talk about what they hate and love about their characters, the cast, high school (quite entertaining), dating, parties, the popular crowd, Shakespeare, life on set, and more. It’s all very amusing to watch, though I wish this feature were extended. It seemed like it only touched the surface of what entertaining stories could have been told about the cast and crew’s high school life and filming. One thing missing from the list of things to talk about…their favorite moments from the original 10 Things movie.

Backstage Pass – Behind The Scenes With Meaghan And Lindsey (3:38) – Meaghan And Lindsey are interviewed on the set of 10 Things as they talk about their characters, their chemistry, and then the ladies give viewers a tour of the school that the cast and crew film at. It was a fun, different look into the school, however it would have been even better if viewers got a peak at their lockers to find out more about the characters individualism. Still a great feature, a bit short…can we get a house tour in the next volume with Meaghan, Lindsey, and funny man, Larry Miller?

Commentaries – The commentary for the Pilot Episode is conducted by cast members, Lindsey Shaw and Larry Miller, writers/producer, Carter Covington, and director, Gil Junger. There was discussion about the original script, first day of filming and when the cast first met each other. An interesting fun fact learned is that the school used in the show is the same school that was used for filming in the films, Heathers and The Craft! The commentary for the Light My Fire Episode is conducted by cast members Dana Davis, Nicholas Braun, Ethan Peck, and executive producer Robin Schiff. There is discussion on working with each of the cast members and then even more interesting…apparently (jokingly?) there will be 8 seasons and no graduation. Filming secrets are shared in both commentaries, though since this is only a half hour show, the commentary goes by incredibly fast so not a moment is wasted as there is high energy and great information shared. It may surprise viewers that there is no commentary for the last episode on the DVD, Don’t Leave Me Like This.

Also a bonus feature on the DVD is the Pilot Episode of Make It Or Break It. Stay tuned for my DVD review of Make It Or Break It Volume One.
