10 Things I Talked About With 10 Things Writer, Karen Lutz

Earlier this month you read the reviews for 10 Things I Hate About You 10th Anniversary Edition DVD and 10 Things I Hate About Volume 1 DVD and as my 10 Things coverage comes to a close, I present you with this new interview with 10 Things screenwriter, Karen Lutz. You might remember her name from when I posted about her back in 2008 during the Screenwriting Expo but if not…you’ve definitely seen her films, The Ugly Truth, The House Bunny, She’s the Man, Ella Enchanted, and my personal favorite…Legally Blonde. Read below, for the 10 Things I talked about with Karen Lutz.

What was it like coming together with your cast to do commentary for the 10 Things 10th Anniversary DVD?
It was a blast! We had so much fun recalling all of the old stories, things that some of us knew that others didn’t, it was great.

It’s never mentioned just how many deleted scenes there were exactly…can you tell us if not how deleted scenes than how long the script originally was?
I think there were 5-6 that got deleted. The director, Gil Junger added a role for himself as a teacher but that was cut too.

Are you involved with the TV show?
I have nothing to do with the TV show. They have a fresh take on it, different school, different situations…the girls are the new ones in town. Kirsten and I were approached to write the Pilot but we didn’t because we are very busy writing movies.

What’s the one scene in the film that you envisioned a completely different way than it was portrayed?
The serenade that Heath Ledger’s character did. We always envisioned it like he was singing outside of a classroom window but when they all got up to that amazing school, and saw the great field the director said that we should do it here and it was a very good choice!

Of all of Shakespeare’s work, what inspired you to make a film adaptation of The Taming Of the Shrew?
It just seemed like a really fun story to update to modern times and put into that teen world, where everybody’s emotions are so raw at that point in life.

Were the actors who you originally envisioned?
No, well, the biggest known actor at the time was Joseph Gordon-Levitt and nobody else was incredibly famous so we didn’t envision that at all.

Do you have a favorite line or a favorite character from Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew?
My favorite character has to be Joey (Andrew Keegan) because he just makes me laugh. Even though he’s the villain, he is so funny! Also Michael…David Krumholtz did a great job. My favorite line…gosh there are so many…probably, “Remove head from sphincter then drive.” (laughs)

The 10 Things Speech in the film is phenomenal but have you ever thought about writing a 10 Things love speech just for fun?
No we haven’t thought about that but that would be fun!

What’s the writing dynamic between you and Kirsten and what do you think about writer’s block?
We usually sit outside by the pool and write on legal pad. But right now it’s raining so we are inside the house. We don’t usually get writer’s block. We tend to have more ideas than we have time to write actually.

So what are your upcoming projects?
I have a movie, Permission that I wrote on my own and it is about to go into production and Kirsten and I are currently writing a movie.

Karen Lutz’s latest project, The Ugly Truth is available on DVD and Blu-ray today.
