In every school there’s one girl, every girl wants to be friends with…and every guy would die for. Megan Fox (Transformers) is hotter than hell as Jennifer, a gorgeous, seductive cheerleader who takes evil to a whole new level after she’s possessed by a sinister demon. Steamy action and gore galore ensue as the male student body succumbs to Jennifer’s insatiable appetite for human flesh. Now it’s up to her best friend (Amanda Seyfried; Mamma Mia!) to stop the demonic diva’s reign of terror before it’s too late!
Fueled by the satiric wit of Oscar-winning writer Diablo Cody (Juno), the sexy horror directed by Karyn Kusama (Aeon Flux) features a strong supporting cast of young Hollywood stars including Adam Brody (“The O.C.”), Johnny Simmons (Hotel For Dogs) and Chris Pratt (Bride Wars) as well as J.K. Simmons (Juno) and Amy Sedaris (“Strangers With Candy”).
Jennifer’s Body brings the horror and comedy that teens will definitely enjoy. The storyline is fantastic and while the execution may not have been as fantastic, this film will definitely have a cult following as it as clever dialogue, sex, blood and gore, and more. Now while there is clever dialogue, at times the slang is, well, not even out dated but simply made up…which is where the execution fails as this film is not a timeless horror.
Instead of trying to be cool and appeal to the teenage crowd, Jennifer’s Body should have focused more on character development and more realistically showing certain aspects of scenes, like Jennifer throwing up in Needy’s kitchen as well as the starting of the fire at the bar. Director, Karyn Kusama mentioned in the commentary that a certain scene in the film “went beyond realism” but it is safe to say that for the majority of the film.
As far as the cast goes…this film was well casted and it is safe to say that J.K. Simmons had the best lines in the film. Viewers can tell that Adam Brody really had fun playing his character. Amanda Seyfried is a much stronger actress than Megan Fox however their chemistry was perfect. Really though, this film only touched the surface of what goodness could have really shined through. While not a five star classic horror, it is pretty wild and worth the watch if you want to be slightly scared and get a good laugh in here and there.
Special Features:
Commentary – The first commentary for the theatrical version of the film was conducted by Director Karyn Kusama and Writer Diablo Cody. It’s a very straight-forward commentary that Kusama dominates, while Diablo chimes in on occasion…not enough. It was a bit of a dry conversation. Karyn Kusama gives much of a technical commentary…and much more of one in the second commentary that she conducts by herself for the extended cut which is 5 minutes longer. On the extended commentary, she explains how this version better reflects Diablo Cody’s original script and why these scenes were cut down. Though this commentary seems to simply pick out the scenes rather than have viewers watch the entire film all over again, which is a much better option. Overall, it would have been much better if there was only one commentary for the extended version with both Cody and Kusama (and possibly one or two members of the cast) and if there were more features on the DVD as a whole.
