Sunny fans will be very satisfied with It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia: A Very Sunny Christmas. As usual, there is non stop comedy, comedy that will forced you to press pause multiples times so that you can get your laughter out. There are some scenes that will have you laughing so hard you just might shed a tear or two. The casting for the younger versions of the gang was spot on. Flashbacks of their past Christmases was the icing on the cake. Danny Devito’s full rear might take you aback and the animation might not appeal to some but aside from this, there is nothing negative to say about this special. This is a Sunny classic…it is a Sunny highlight of the 09-10 season, heck the entire series. It’s the perfect stocking stuffer for those who have not seen Sunny but have Sunny humor. Get it, you’ll love it!
Special Features:
Young Charlie & Young Mac Deleted Scenes – There are 3 deleted scenes, titled “Dad,” “Dogs,” and “Bird.” The scenes are quite funny, as first off, the casting for young Charlie and young Mac was fantastic. Next…the first deleted scene, “Dad” had a great balance of drama and comedy and showed story development, err character development I should say. This, I would not have minded seeing in the special. The second deleted scene, “Dogs” was the most mature of the deleted scenes and I definitely could have done without, so it is good to know that this scene did not make the final cut. While it might be funny, it does not move the story along at all. The last scene, “Bird” was heartwarming in the sense that we learn that Charlie started going through puberty before Mac did and you see the kids have this somewhat awkward conversation about it. If that means anything to anyone, you can really appreciate this deleted scene.
Behind the Scenes/Making Of – This was a very well put together piece. This feature starts out with Kaitlin Olson saying, “Oh shit you guys!” What a great welcome. What Sunny fans will enjoy is that not only do we see behind the scenes of filming, but we get a look at the making of the animation and clay dolls of the characters that were used in this special. Sunny writers, Sonny Lee & Patrick Walsh helped put this feature together and did a fabulous job. This feature is not short, it is at just the right running time and is packed with lots of goodies, so make sure to watch!
A Sunny Sing-A-Long – The sing along is to “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” as the cast is singing around a piano with a Christmas tree in the background – and yes, the cast is decked out in Christmas gear. It’s quite funny since at no point in the sing along are words on the screen to sing along with. It is also funny because there are close ups on each cast member doing silly things, and more. Don’t want to spoil the funny so just watch!
It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia airs Thursdays at 10/9c on F/X.
