TV fans in Canada, if you have been watching Heartland then you have been starting your week off right since its Season 3 premiere earlier this fall.
For those not in Canada, you might remember the title, Heartland from my interview with actress, Cindy Busby earlier this year. Heartland is a one hour family drama based on the popular books written by Lauren Brooke. The show follows sisters Amy and Lou Fleming and their grandfather, Jack, through the highs and lows of life on a horse ranch.
Recently, I was able to talk to cast member, Kerry James who plays Caleb about Heartland and more. Check it out.
What can you tell us about this season of Heartland?
My character goes through this huge arc, from falling in love to having other major issues. It’s pretty much a boy becoming a man. It takes a good woman to challenge a man and call him out on his bull, so it will be interesting.
Have you read the Heartland series by Lauren Brooke?
You know what, I haven’t. I don’t think my character exists in the books so maybe I’m biased. (laughs)
What are your character’s strengths & weaknesses?
You know, his strength is his weakness…he is so stubborn. Even when he knows he is wrong, he is still stubborn about it. Although when he ends up right he ends up saving the day because of it. (laughs)
Have you done any commentary or anything for the Heartland Season 1 DVD?
No but for Season 2 I am definitely looking forward to doing something.
What was the audition like for Stargate Universe and have you seen Stargate SG1 or Stargate Atlantis?
Yes, I have seen seen Stargate SG1 or Stargate Atlantis! As for Stargate Universe, as for auditioning…I’d say in the past year, the level of confidence I have going in has increased so when I go in, I really feel like my chances are really high. So it was a cool audition.
You recently finished shooting the Nickelodeon film, The Boy Who Cried Werewolf also featuring with Brooke Shields. What was it like and can you tell us about your role?
It was so cool. None of my scenes were with Brooke Shields, I worked most with Victoria Justice (Zoey 101) but I did get to meet her, talk to her, hang out with her on set. Brooke is really cool, very sweet, and as humble as can be. My role is kind of like the jock who’s the jerk and…it’s always fun to play someone with an attitude.
What did you enjoy the most at the Vancouver Film School?
Vancouver Film School is great! For me, one of the teachers I worked with Steven Park in his scene study class and I found his class incredibly beneficial.
We know that you are interested in directing & writing, so can you tell us about the learning process now?
It’s constantly a challenge. When I’m on set and not up for a scene, I’m always behind the camera department or by the script supervisor and trying to figure out how they shape projects and scripts together. I have a lot of stuff that I want to get off the ground so it is definitely beneficial to see how everything works.
Who are your favorite screenwriters & directors?
I love The Wire and I’ve been on this Ed Burns kick lately. He has style. When he is on a project, that project does well. He is amazing. A dream would be to work for a guy like that.
When you are ready to create your own piece of work, would you go for a drama or comedy?
Lately, I’ve been thinking that a TV series would be good. Comedy is the most challenging. Drama is more up my alley. But who knows, maybe I’ll try my hand at comedy.
Heartland airs on CBC Sundays at 7pm (7:30pm NF).
