I wasn’t familiar with Nicholas Sparks until his novel, A Walk To Remember was adapted into a film in 2002. Since then, Nicholas Sparks has been on my list of authors to read. I am proud to say that I have read my first Sparks novel! His latest, The Last Song, is an incredible love story and coming of age novel that I highly recommend.
Seventeen year-old Veronica “Ronnie” Miller’s life was turned upside-down when her parents divorced and her father moved from New York City to Wilmington, North Carolina. Three years later, she remains angry and alienated from her parents, especially her father… until her mother decides it would be in everyone’s best interest if she spent the summer in Wilmington with him. Ronnie’s father, a former concert pianist and teacher, is living a quiet life in the beach town, immersed in creating a work of art that will become the centerpiece of a local church. The tale that unfolds is an unforgettable story about love in its myriad forms – first love, the love between parents and children – that demonstrates, as only a Nicholas Sparks novel can, the many ways that deeply felt relationships can break our hearts… and heal them.
Right away, Sparks wins me over by writing this novel from the point of view of multiple characters. This definitely helps the reader get a better understanding of certain characters and appeals to a wide audience, both teens and adults. As far as the characters go, Ronnie has the “woe is me” teenager vibe for half of the novel, that really irritated me and thankfully through certain life experiences grew to become a better person in the end. Although in the first half, her brother, Jonah is much more likable.
Ronnie’s father, Steve is much better understood, as the reasons of why he was and is the way is his are revealed, whereas reasons why Ronnie does many things that she does (aside from the divorce) are not explained. Ronnie’s love interest, Will was written perfectly, as was the chemistry between him and Ronnie. Ronnie’s relationships with every character that she comes in contact with is written so well and creates very touching stories.
One relationship in particular, Ronnie and Steve is the most intriguing because as the story goes on, Ronnie really gets to know her father for the first time in her life. Falling in love and finding the love she always had for her father really changes Ronnie for the better and that is what is incredible about reading this novel. The Last Song is very much character driven and it will be interesting to see these characters on the big screen.
There is a lot that goes on during Ronnie’s summer vacation in North Carolina that should not be spoiled, so definitely pick up a copy of The Last Song to read all about it. You may shed a few tears towards the end. Also, the title of this novel and cover art couldn’t be anymore fitting! Both are just perfect! The Last Song is a fantastic read, that will easily consume you for a weekend and will have readers anticipating the upcoming film adaptation.
