TV Week in Review

Note: I will not be reviewing Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Dexter, Three Rivers, The Big Bang Theory, House, Warehouse 13, The Good Wife (after the Pilot), Mercy, Modern Family, Eastwick (after the Pilot), 30 Rock, Fringe, Ghost Whisperer, Medium, or Stargate Universe as there just is not enough time in the week to review every single show that I watch. You can catch my reviews of Glee on Gleek Squad Podcast each week.

90210 – To New Beginnings!

Naomi: I’m very possessive when it comes to balls.

Teddy: I like the way you handle your balls.

The season finale was a fun beginning to the new season. I adore Jessica Stroup’s hair cut. I like the theme music from the first season but this remixed version for this season is not bad. Will it change every season? That would be cool. Anyway, I am glad that Adrianna and Navid honestly communicated about their feelings on having sex and hopefully Navid won’t break up with her because of it. I also hope that either Silver and Dixon can work out or Dixon can find someone better for him and Silver can find someone on her level (or even someone who can bring her up a level). As for Annie, no one can fault her for feeling the way that she does, regarding both the party and the car accident. However, she does need to tell Naomi straight out what happened the night of the party. This new character, Teddy does not seem like much good. The way Ethan leaving the show was handled was done well. As far as the ending goes…it was not “shocking” as I thought it would be. While humiliating it will be for Annie, that storyline doesn’t seem like it builds up to anything long term for the season and that’s what I’m waiting for. On a side note, is there a bigger budget for wardrobe this year because the fashion is fabulous…although I never really saw Silver as one who would wear dresses casually so, it is interesting to see how her fashion evolves. All in all, this season looks like it will be a good one!

Melrose Place – Pilot

Ella: So, was Riley balling like a newborn when she said yes?
Jonah: Well, eh, I mean she didn’t actually say “yes” yet.

Having never seen the original Melrose Place, I didn’t know what to expect (aside from Laura Leighton and Daphne Zuniga’s return among others). However, what I saw was a nice setup to the season. Riley and Jonah’s lingering start to their engagement was a nice way to start off showing their relationship. Jonah being rejected and then being bought out to keep a secret was something else! Lauren being offered money to sleep with a guy was crazy! Anyway, I hope that Lauren is able to find a way to continue studying to be a doctor. Ella is quite the character and it looks like she will be stirring up tons of drama this season! Violet seems like another one who will stir up trouble “unintentionally” since she is seen as “the good girl.” That’s just my opinion based on the little bit of time we saw Violet in this episode. She might actually really be a good girl. Only time will tell. The ending of the episode was very exciting, revealing somethings…leaving me anticipating next week’s episode. Overall though…honestly, I feel like this show is a soap opera but a step up…if that makes sense. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing yet but I do know that I will be tuning in next week!

Vampire Diaries – Pilot

Elena: Go ahead, keep it up. But just know I am going to be there to ruin your buzz every time, you go it?

The show opened with the classic, boy and girl driving down the road alone at night, they hit a person while driving, the guy gets out and is attacked by a vampire and the girl is then attacked once she gets out of the car. As typical as it was, it did its job in setting the tone. Anyway, I was really thrilled with the character development in the Pilot. I enjoyed finding out how Elena’s home life is right away and what her 2 best friends are all about. Elena’s brother, Jeremy is using drugs to deal with the death of their parents so it will be interesting to see if and how his character grows and evolves over time. It was made clear who plays what role in high school. Regarding the main love story, I do have to say that the chemistry between Elena and Stefan needs some work…on Stefan’s part. I am very interested to find out more about Stefan and Katharine’s past and how that will affect Stefan and Elena’s present and future. The main thing that I am worried about is Stefan’s brother, Damon being the only main conflict with Stefan at home. Aside from Stefan’s love life and brother issues, what else does his character have to offer for more than one season? Also, Paul Wesley needs to act like he means what he is saying when he is doing the voice over for his diary entries. Now while we see the typical teen party in the woods with underage drinking and a near death experience… what I love most about the show is that the characters really have complicated relationships among each other. Hopefully this show is more character driven than it is about the basic clichéd story it seems to portray. This show is romantic, sweet, and developed by Kevin Williamson (Scream, Dawson’s Creek) so it definitely has potential. Just tone it down on the use of today’s slang, pop culture references, and fog machine. I will be watching next week, will you?
