Remember in early August, I mentioned Monica Olsen‘s involvement in The Unknowns? Well, here is your first look at The Unknowns and an exclusive interview with Monica just for Hollywood the Write Way!
How and when did you become involved in the project?
I was recently approached by one of the creators, Mark Altman, who was one of the owners of Femme Fatales Magazines. He wrote and produced Free Enterprise, Castle a new series on ABC, and Dead or Alive, one of the bestselling video games. The project came about 2 months ago –they were launching a comics line and wanted the premiere comic to feature me as a character. I got the phone call about 4 weeks ago and it came about fast since we wanted to announce it at Comic Con with the first issue debuting in the fall.
So is the character, Alexis based on you?
I don’t like to say that it is based on me. They were looking for a woman who has a lot of linguistic skills and athleticism, which I do…and, obviously, the likeness is based on me. But she’s definitely very different, I don’t go around shooting people — most of the time. My character leads a very mundane existence until I encounter a member of The Unknowns who had actually been completely disbanded for years. He tells me that my memory was erased and I used to be a superhero which seems hard for me to believe. I guess you could sort of say its like “The Bourne Identity” meets “Wanted.”
What do you think of The Bourne Identity comparison?
I think it is a great comparison. It has that strong character piecing together the puzzle where they came from. It is modern day and there is realism as well. It’s very smart and grounded in the real world and not a fantasy.
What are you looking forward to most when it comes to a potential film, video games, etc…?
I am looking forward to all of it! A movie would be amazing because it has all of the right components for such in my opinion. It is so action driven and has a strong plot, storyline and has great eye candy. But first and foremost, I want it to be a great comic that stands on its own. And I think it does. The reaction in San Diego was amazing.
What is it like working with the creators, Mark Altman and Steve Kriozere?
It’s great! They are amazing guys to work with I am so very lucky – it doesn’t seem like work. They really want to know what I think and involve me in the creative process and want to know what I think Alexis would do and think which is great – how often does that happen? I’ve known them for awhile, ever since I appeared in Femme Fatales magazine, so we have a great relationship.
What would you like to see for the future of your character?
What is important to do is explore her vulnerability as well. She makes a lot of sacrifices which you will find out. Alexis is a very strong and powerful person but with that comes a price that you will see.
Are there any female comic book characters that you really like and want to bring pieces of them to Alexis?
Absolutely. I like the Sara Pezzini character in Witchblade. Film wise, I love Tomb Raider. It is a big honor to have been chosen by the writers and I am excited to carry on what these wonderful ladies have done. Femme Fatales is about strong, empowered female protagonists and that’s what I hope the comic help reflects.
When did you get into comic books?
As a child, I wasn’t a huge comic book fan but I was more into the movie aspect, into sci fi. I actually was a big fan of Tintin at the time, which I guess sounds cooler now that Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson are making a movie of it. But when I was a little older, I got into comics a lot more. Stuff like Watchmen and Batman. I really like Warren Ellis stuff and Witchblade is something I really responded to. It also features a sexy, female protagonist. Also, I always loved Talia in the Batman books especially after they cast Ras Al Ghul in Batman Begins. I can’t believe she’s never been in a Batman movie. Chris Nolan, if you’re reading…
