Recently, I was able to speak with Actor, Byron Lawson who will be appearing in the new 8 part original drama series, Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures which will debut on Corus Entertainment’s Movie Central (Western Canada) and The Movie Network (Eastern Canada) in early 2010. You may recognize Byron from Snakes on a Plane or Jeremiah or more recently Smallville, Sanctuary, and Samurai Girl. Below, he talks about Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures, his past projects, and more. Check it out:
Tell me about the upcoming series, Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures.
In a nutshell, it follows the story of four medical residents from their first year of college through medical school. It shows the reality of being in medical school. It’s the grim reality of it that is shown. It also deals with the dark side of each character which is very colorful in itself.
Had you heard of & did you read the book, Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures, Dr. Vincent Lam before being cast?
I started reading it and ironically enough, I was told that it was better if I didn’t read it because there were a few changes with the adaptation from book to screenplay. I got 1/10 of the way through when I was told not to read it so I was not confused when I read the script.
Did Dr. Lam ever come on set when the cast & crew was filming?
We met him at the beginning of set but he has not been on set. He has been available to us anytime we had questions about our characters but he is still a practicing physician so he has his job to do.
Tell me about the audition process and preparing for the role.
I heard about it 3 months prior to going into production. I put the audition on tape, forgot about it, and was doing my thing in LA. Then my agent called and said that the producers wanted me to do another tape with changes that were made. The next day my agent said that they would probably call to let me know that they want me in Toronto in 2 days for 3 months. It all happened really fast.
Moving onto some of your past work…do you still keep in touch with anyone from your days on Jeremiah?
If anything, I keep in touch with Peter Stebbings who played Markus. He’s from Canada as well. I’ll also talk to Malcolm-Jamal Warner every now and then.
Which fans do you meet more, fans of Jeremiah or Snakes on a Plane?
Absolutely Snakes on a Plane. Quick story…I was in China recently and this person from Britain ran over to me immediately and said that they had recognized me from Snakes on a Plane. He put his girlfriend on the phone who was from LA and said, “Oh my God, you won’t believe who I’m with.” She was freaking out on the phone. It was really interesting. Yeah, it would definitely be Snakes on a Plane. It has kind of a cult following.
