It’s always an interesting experience going back to watch a beloved TV show of your childhood as an adult. I reviewed the first season of Family Matters here and now skipping to the fourth season, there’s even more to appreciate and even more to shake your head at while laughing. I must mention, watching an all black sitcom from one of the five major networks that lasted for NINE seasons and watching the sitcoms of today…sitcoms have gone downhill and Hollywood, in all its progression has in a way become less diverse and that is disappointing. I appreciate this show all the more because of these two reasons. Anyway, onto discussing the DVD…

I loved watching these episodes as an adult for so many reasons including seeing things with a greater understanding and appreciation. For instance, seeing Eddie oblivious to his father wanting to spend time with him working on his car. Seeing the sacrifices people make for the ones they love. Seeing how parents deal with their kids trying to do the right thing once they’ve realized what mistakes they’ve made. There’s so much to appreciate about family driven shows and this show has it all.

There were quite a few highlights this season including the episode in which role reversal takes place as Laura’s guardian angel shows her what life would be like where Steve is cool and she’s the nerd. Season four also marks the introduction of Myra (the late Michelle Thomas) and a brief stint from Glee‘s own Naya Rivera who plays Gwendolyn, a friend of Richie’s. Let’s not forget the hilarious game of telephone when Maxine decides to go on a date with Waldo. Speaking of Waldo, Urkel threw shade at Waldo all the time! It was noticeable as a child but it became even moreso now in my recent viewing. Also noticeable more times than I would have liked to have noticed was the bad acting. There were moments when certain characters just didn’t deliver or over-delivered which was worse. But all in all, this show is still fun to watch, still a great tool to bring families together, and still valuable and just as loved as it was the first time it aired. So if you’re thinking about adding Family Matters to your DVD collection, I’d say don’t hesitate.

Unfortunately, there are no bonus features.
