DVD Review: The Fresh Prince of Bel Air The Complete Sixth Season

Release Date: April 19, 2011
Rating: Not Rated
Running Time: 542 minutes (24 Episodes)

It’s a rap: the final season! The Fresh Prince’s reign is over. Will Smith and the rest of the hilarious cast take their final bows with all 24 Season 6 Episodes on 3 Discs. A lot’s happened since Will’s life got flipped, turned upside down and he showed up at the Banks’s Bel-Air doorstep. And the final season keeps the fun rollin’ to the very end with hip comedy style, phat one-liners, a not-to-be-missed blooper episode, and guest stars that include William Shatner, B.B. King, Dick Clark, Richard Roundtree, Wayne Newton and – in a standout turn – Chris Rock as an on-the-rise comic and his butt-ugly sister. Any guess who ends up as Will’s date for a night for dancin’ and (ugh) romancin’? You go, Will!

The final season of The Fresh Prince has finally released on DVD! Fans can sit down and relive the infamous “Burnin’ Down the House” season premiere, the “Show-Biz Madam” trial, Carlton and Hilary’s Thanksgiving troubles, Carlton’s college interview, and more. There are more memorable and laughable one liners in this sitcom than any sitcom on television today. This series shaped a generation so it’s incredibly gratifying to see the complete season on DVD. “Not With My Cousin You Don’t” showcased Smith and Alfonso Ribeiro’s dramatic and comedic versatility while attempting to stop Ashley from losing her virginity so young. Will and Carlton went through so much together this season, from double dating and gambling in Vegas to trying to figure out how to best handle Philip and Viv’s brief separation. Will’s relationship with Phil has grown tremendously since season 1, it’s so wonderful to see how far these two have come.

In fact, all of the Banks family members went on incredible rides this last season…and while a sitcom, the show has tackled some very serious family and personal issues. Some great lessons can be learned from any given episode of the show all the while promoting Smith’s work (“Bad Boys”) or including guest stars such as Chris Rock, Regis Philbin, and William Shatner to name a few. Another great aspect of this season included Ribeiro’s directing debut (“I, Ooh, Baby, Baby”) as well as the blooper/behind the scenes episode, “I, Whoops, There It Is.” If only there were more episodes like this on television today. While there’s no cast reunion, commentary, or any bonus features to accompany any of the episodes, this season still has a welcome spot in any TV DVD collection.
